OUR NEW WARDROBE

Colossians 3:12-14
12. Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering;
13. Forbearing (be a steady rock for...) one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye.
14. And above all these things put on charity, which is (love) the bond of perfectness.

King David broke the tenth commandment when he first saw Bathsheba (2 Samuel 11:2). In his mind, seemingly harmless thoughts and desires were given room to grow, and indeed, this one 'little' sin grew into host of terrible sins with tragically destructive conseqences to many lives. He was fortunate to have a friend who confronted him about it, and afterward, with a contrite heart in Psalm 51, he acknowledges the fact that we're born guilty and shapen in iniquity. David tried on the selfish garment of covetousness, and it wasn't long before he ended up wearing almost every other garment of carnality that Paul warns us about here in Colossians chapter three (fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, covetousness, anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication, and lying).

What was the link between David's sin of covetousness and the tragedy that soon followed? He lied to himself! Lying pride allows us to believe that we can put on one or two of those garments of carnality and take them off later. The problem is that even though we know these garments are unbecoming to us as Christians, they do fit our old form so very well, and they can be so comfortable that we easily forget or fail to realize we're wearing one of them. Fortunately for David, Nathan lovingly admonished him by causing him to see his own faults.

Whenever you're having trouble putting on the garments of the Spirit, examine yourself to see if the problem is that you're still wearing one of your old outfits underneath.

Isaiah 61:10 I will greatly rejoice in the LORD, my soul shall be joyful in my God; for he hath clothed me with the garments of salvation, he hath covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decketh himself with ornaments, and as a bride adorneth herself with her jewels.
