John 6:35-38

In John chapter 4, we read about certain woman who is making her way to the well during the heat of the day. Little did she know that a certain someone was waiting there for her, waiting to strike up a conversation, hoping to share Truth with her, and hoping she would share the Truth with others. Little did she know…Jesus had made an appointment with her.

He asks her for a drink from the well, and proceeds to tell her about a new kind of water…

John 4:13-15
...Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again: But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life. The woman saith unto him, Sir, give me this water, that I thirst not, neither come hither to draw.

Drawing and toting water is quite a chore. She was eager to be relieved from the burden, so she says, “Sir, give me this water.”

Skip forward to John 6:34, and we see Jesus’ own countrymen saying virtually the same thing, “Lord, evermore give us this bread.”

John 6:35-38
35. And Jesus said unto them,
I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.
36.
But I said unto you, That ye also have seen me, and believe not.
37.
All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.
38.
For I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me.

Our minds are built the same way as the Samaritan woman’s, and the same as the multitude wanting bread at Capernaum. Very little has changed since then.

The Samaritan woman (an outcast member of a despised society), indeed thought Jesus was describing some new kind of carnal H2O. She didn’t quite understand this “Living Water” yet, but she obeyed Jesus anyway, and by her testimony many people were brought into a relationship with the Savior. If she were here today, she could explain the “Living Water” very well to us.

On the other hand, the multitude asking Jesus for the “Bread of Life” thought Jesus was describing some new kind of carnal bread. The kind that fills your tummy everyday, and it’s free.

John 4:24
God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.

We cannot worship God in the flesh.

I have three questions for us today:
Do we recognize it when Jesus has made appointments and scheduled meetings for us with people who are thirsty and hungry?
When He does, do we appear to them as wells of Living Water, or just a body that’s 65% H2O?
When He does, do we obediently distribute the Bread of Life?

John 4:34 Jesus saith unto them,
My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work.

Matthew 6:25
Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment?
