2004-07-11 Communion Dedication - Baldwin Christian Church

As we begin eavesdropping at this point in John chapter 6, our Lord is speaking to a large group of people who are following Him for the wrong reasons, or at best they don’t know why they’re following Him.

Jesus has just finished explaining that He came down from heaven to be, for them and for us, Spiritual food; the true Bread of Life. He set a great example for us when He explained that His reason for being born was submission and obedience to the will of the Father, and not His own will. He set a great example for us when He didn’t stop after saying, (v.38) “For I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me.” He didn’t stop there.

He said…

John 6:39-40

39. And this is the Father's will which hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day.
40.
And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day.

This world has so many misconceptions, so many false ideas about who God is. Millions of people in this world lean towards believing in Him, toward a saving knowledge of His love for them, but they’re held back by misinformation, by bad impressions, and even by our deafening silence when it comes to revealing God’s personality.

Miracles and healings definitely get people’s attention, but it’s what we can’t see that counts the most. The substance, the meat, the very power in our existence depends on faith. It’s faith that causes you to align your will with God’s will, and it’s your faith that allows Him to move that immovable mountain in your life. It’s your faith that gives back to Jesus. It’s your faith that causes you to lend a helping hand to people teetering on the edge of belief, and it’s faith that gives you courage to ask the Father to bind that strong man (the devil) so you can plunder his house (Matthew 12:22-30).

In the words of our beloved pastor, “It’s not enough to believe in the resurrection from the dead. You need to know the One who brought it about, who made it happen.”

We all know someone who’s teetering on the edge. As we prepare our hearts to remember Jesus, let’s ask for help. Let’s ask for more of His Spirit, that in some small but effective way we might help Jesus receive all He’s been given, that He should lose nothing. Let’s ask that we might be instrumental in revealing the Father’s will, His true personality, His love…His Son, Jesus.
